전교생 50명 농촌 오지 ‘임고초등학교의 반란’

전국 영어말하기 대회 이원빈 우수상, 김수현 장려상

▲ 전국 영어말하기 대회에서 입상한 영천 임고초 이원빈(왼쪽), 김수현 학생이 영진전문대 외국어교육원 앤드류 워너, 김현정 강사와 함께 기뻐하고 있다. 한 학급 인원 10여 명, 전교생이 50명인 농촌 오지학교인 영천시 임고면 양항리 임고초등학교(교장 장병학) 이원빈(12ㆍ5년)군과 김수현(10ㆍ3년)양이 전국 영어말하기 대회에서 우수한 성적을 거둬 화제가 되고 있다. 이들은 지난 6일 서울 사학연금회관 대강당에서 열린 문화체육관광부 후원 제14회 대한민국 학생 영어 말하기 대회에서 우수상과 장려상을 각각 수상했으며 이원빈 군은 “이번 대회를 통해 영어로 말하는데 자신감이 생겼다”고 말했다. 한ㆍ미 문화교류를 위한 미국공연 대표 학생을 선발한 이번 대회에는 전국 초등학교에서 350여 명이 참석할 정도로 경쟁이 치열했다. 이들 두 학생의 대회 참가와 입상은 경북도내 오지 초등학교 원어민교사 지원 사업을 펼치고 있는 한국수자원공사와 영진전문대의 인연으로 시작됐다. 매주 한차례 원어민 강사 1명이 이 학교를 방문, 영어수업을 진행하고 있는 가운데 이 대회 개최 소식을 접하고 두 학생을 추천했다. 이들은 지난달 18일부터 대회 직전인 지난 5일까지 대회 참가를 위해 방과 후 택시를 타고 대구 북구 복현동 영진전문대 외국어교육원을 찾아 하루 2시간씩 주 3회에 걸쳐 집중적인 영어말하기 특별교육을 받았다고 한다. 발표 주제와 함께 1분 30초 분량의 스토리 짜기에 나선 이군은 할머니가 매년 150포기 이상의 김치 담구는 모습에서 ‘김장’을, 김양은 한국 고유의 문화 중 태어나 가족들로부터 첫 축하는 받는 ‘백일’을 주제로 영어 말하기 발표를 준비해 이런 성과를 일궈냈다. 김현정 영진전문대 외국어교육원 강사는 ”오지 초등학교 학생들이어서 문법과 발음, 영작이 다소 부족했지만 원어민 강사와 함께 약 3주 동안 발음과 억양 수정, 발표태도 등을 꾸준히 공부하자 학생들의 실력이 놀랍게 향상됐다“고 말했다.   한편 김영석 영천시장은 영어교육발전에 본보기가 돼 학교장 이하 지도교사와 학생들을 초청해 면담을 나누면서 우수학생에 대한 칭찬과 격려를 했다.           ◈ 이원빈군 원고   Hello everyone. I am happy to be here. My name is Lee Won Bin. I'm 12 years old. I live in Yeongcheon, and I go to Imgol Elementary School. I love eating kimchi. The word comes from a Korean word dimchae, meaning vegetables preserved in salt water. Kimchi is a very important part of a Korean's diet. It is full of protein. Most Koreans cannot enjoy any meal without kimchi. Kimchi is a very nutritious food and science has shown this to be true.But our kimjang is much more dear to our hearts. My grandmother makes very delicious kimjang. Because it is so good, my grandmother is honored with making the kimjang we need for each winter. We have more than one hundred fifty cabbages, so when we have kimjang, it is too much work for my grandmother alone. My dad calls my aunts and cousins to help. They come from Seoul and Daegu. When we have kimjang, there is a fishy smell everywhere, because my family has a secret recipe. At that time, I often watch TV alone while the others work. Sometimes I feel guilty, so I keep the sound low on the TV. We bury some kimjang in the special jars and put it in the ground until spring. The rest we put in the special refrigerator. I wish kimjang lasted longer. I really enjoy my family time, talking together, and I miss my family when they are gone home. I hope all your kimjangs are as happy as mine have been.   ◈ 김수현양 원고 Hi everyone, My name is Kim Soo Hyun. I’m 10 years old and I go to Imgo elementary school in Young Chun city. In Korea, the family is always together during the most important events of our lives. Do you know what the first celebration is in Korean life? I’ll give you a hint. It was when you were 100 days old. I’m talking about Baegil. You probably don’t remember it. You were much too young! Do you know what Baegil is? After a baby is 100 days old, a family has a ceremony called Baegil, to celebrate the baby’s good fortune for surviving and to pray for the baby’s future health and long life. A long time ago, when there were no modern hospitals and medicine, a baby’s survival was not certain. But after 100 days of life, people thought a baby had a good chance of continuing to grow healthy and strong. So, the family has a celebration. I remember my cousin’s Baegil. It was a very happy time with lots of good food. I learned from my mom, the food we eat at Baegil has a special importance for the baby. BakSulGi(백설기) symbolizes long life and pure spirit. SooSooPotDuck(수수팥떡) gaurds against evil spirits. If I were to explain Korean culture to foreiners, I'd talk about the importance of family and celebration.
